Promoting youth hockey in New Brighton, Mounds View, St. Anthony and Shoreview, MN
My my My my

From the President - August 2005

You are seeing your IYHA Newsletter earlier than normal this month.  August will be a very busy month, and the fun starts early.  This coming Friday, August 5th, is the first of three parades that we will promote our association and youth hockey.  Please have your player skate along with us and hand out candy and good will at the St. Anthony parade.  Heck, you may as well bring your pair of rollerblades too.  Look elsewhere in this newsletter for other parade and registration dates.

Renae is busy organizing ice time with the program coordinators.  You can expect the first on ice warm-ups to begin on September 17th and 18th for the older players.  Initiation will wind up later on into October.  I believe the ice schedule will permit the tryouts to wrap up before MEA weekend.

This is a busy time for the IYHA Board members.  The excitement for the coming season is building rapidly.  Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Jim Cich, IYHA President

Girls Program:

As many of us have been saying for months, we are literally on the cusp of taking this program to a new and exciting level.  With all of our continued recruiting efforts, we will get the numbers of athletes in the program to sustain us into the future.  Two items of note:

RECRUITING:  IYHA Girls will be present at all of the elementary schools at their back-to-school night in August.  We need parent volunteers at each school to help spread the message.  Linda Opperman is heading up the Bel Air effort, Tom Welty is taking the lead at Sunnyside, and Jean Aukee is leading the way at Pinewood.  We need someone to head up the effort at St. John’s.  Contact Chris or one of these parents directly if you can help us spread the word about girls hockey.

8U:  this season we will be starting an all-girls initiation program.  Girls will be able to play co-ed initiation if they wish, but this all-girls 8U program will give our numbers a boost within two years while providing a great environment of development of the athletes.  Currently, I have two non-parent coaches interested in helping coach, but I am looking for parents of girls to take the lead and guide these girls through the program.  Our traveling team coaches will be available on a periodic basis to assist, but we really need 3-4 moms or dads to head this up.  Give Chris a call at 651-636-6152 if you are interested or have more questions.

Irondale Youth Hockey Association Board Meeting Minutes:

IYHA Board of Directors meeting July 21, 2005.  Note: These minutes have not been approved. They will be reviewed, corrected as needed, and approved at the next regular Board of Directors Meeting.

Board members present: Jim Cich, Jeanne Falconer, Niki Gjere, Renae Oleson, Mark Mohar, Chris Tahti, Cheryl Mason.

Board members absent:   Brian Johnson, Randy Bortot, Tom Welty.

Guests:                                  John Dalnes, John Donovan, Dave Rog.

Meeting of the IYHA Board of Directors called to order by President Jim Cich at 6:30 p.m.

Agenda reviewed. Minutes reviewed; motion to approve as presented (NG) (CT), motion carried.

Old Business:

·          ACE Coordinator Description (revised version): Jim Cich. Had presented this at a previous meeting. Made the revisions, distributed. Please review for next meeting where we will vote on adoption of the revised ACE Coordinator description. Niki will publish in newsletter.

·          U8 Initiation format: Chris Tahti. Not going to know for sure until we see our numbers. Typically for other Associations, they have found the first year to be a building year in which you get the word out. The second year is the one that there is an influx of girls. We may call it the Girls Initiation Program for the first year. Will have a coaches meeting on Tuesday and will talk about this. For ice time, will share with other Initiation teams.

·          On Ice Start Dates for Each Program: Jim Cich. What are the on ice start dates for each program? The boy’s program teams will be starting on September 17th; the girl’s program teams will be starting on September 18th. Initiation will start in late October. Boys program: have 8 warm ups scheduled, will have 6 hours of evaluations; may mix evaluations and warm-ups to break up the stress a little bit; will pick non-parent coaches before tryouts; for parent coaches, will wait until teams are picked. Girls program: will have 8 hours of warm-ups for U10 and U12, 3 hours of evaluation for each. Note: whatever schedules have been finalized—will have those available at registration.

·          Board and Specialty Budgets: Budget drafts presented. For review and voting at next meeting. Niki will send copies to those Board members that are absent today. President, Initiation and Ice Commissioner budgets will be forwarded out to Board members.

·          Fundraising: History of fundraising reviewed. In the past, the VP secured the team sponsorships, sales promotions (candy, frozen food, etc). It has shifted to the team being responsible to secure their own sponsorships, and the tournament being the main fundraiser for the Association. Concerns about having fewer funds this year due to Lake Region. Discussion about possibilities of having a fund raising and promotions program. Jim will work on a budget for this.

New Business: Board Roundtable

President: Jim Cich. Went to the Lake Region Meeting and Tournament Meetings. Went well. All other items in President section have been previously discussed.

Vice President: Brian Johnson, absent. (Report given by Jeanne Falconer.) Equipment program: needs to know the first year players. Received 10 sets of starter gear from the MN Wild and Xcel Energy Center. Parades: we are registered for all of the parades. Will be out of town for the first one. Received a call from Sunshine Photography. Information passed on to Niki—coordinating pictures. Tournament: Dean and Sherry from Mounds View were at the Tournament meeting. Tournament: will be dividing duties equally between Irondale and Mounds View. Will have another meeting soon. The January tournament will be expanded—will have another C Bracket—either Squirt or Pee Wee. Don Trudeau is liaison from Lake Region. Still working on asking Lake Region to run the  Tournament checkbook. Proceeds are split 50/50.

Treasurer: Jeanne Falconer. Clarified the hours of ice required for warm ups and evaluations. Ice costs are $160 for Super Rink and Columbia. Ramsey County is $140; after December 31st will go to $145. Fogarty is $130. Opening accounts for the new teams. Hoping business will pick up at Champps. Their business is down due to the non-smoking.

Secretary: Niki Gjere. Aggregated survey results distributed. Individual survey results will be mailed to the board members—will receive specific comments typed in a document. These must be kept confidential. Newsletter deadline changed to be earlier so newsletter will go out earlier—lots of activities in August. Website: a volunteer has agreed to do the newsletter. Working with Linda DeKanick for transition. Stockyard Days volunteering: we have this opportunity again. Volunteers needed to clean up the grounds, then we will received $250 from the New Brighton Sportsmen’s club. We have had excellent feedback in the past—many compliments about our work.

Registration Coordinator: Pat O’Connor. Registration dates were in the last newsletter. New Brighton Parks and Rec charges $50 for weekend use. Reviewed form for registration—revisions made. Need to be clear about option to register for B team only.

Note by Chris Tahti: There is a survey coming to New Brighton Residents. Need to be clear on the survey about concerns related to ice in the winter.

Twin Cities District Representative: Tom Welty (absent). There was no district meeting; no report.

Ice Commissioner: Renae Oleson. Have received Super Rink and Ramsey County ice. Waiting for Columbia ice. Will pick up 6 hours of ice at VMIA. The Ice will be wrapped up sooner than last year. Met with Mounds View and split ice—went well. Will check with Pleasant arena--last year the figure skaters / parents were difficult to work with, don’t want to have players go through that again.

Initiation Coordinator: Cheryl Mason.  Will email out the manual that was developed. Approximately 10 pages long. No additional report—has already been discussed.

Girls Program Coordinator: Chris Tahti. Meeting on Wednesday with coaches. Thursday next week are the District meetings. Will find out what tournaments are good and will start booking them.

Boys Program Coordinator: Mark Mohar. Brad Nowak will be coaching the goalies this year—will open the clinics to Girls and Initiation program goalies. Will check with him about having education with coaches.

Interviews for coaches will be posted in the newsletter. Tom Welty had asked that we make sure to continue with outside evaluators—assured this will continue.

Equipment Manager: Randy Bortot (absent). No report.

Additional Reports:

ACE Coordinator Update: John Donovan. Will talk with Mark and Cheryl before next meeting. Would like to do skill development consistently. Will talk with Renae to check about scheduling this.

HEP Testing meeting will be in August. Not sure how many tests will need to be done—2 or 3. Will teach coaches how to do the HEP testing.

Lake Region Hockey: Jeanne Falconer. Lake Region wants to be running clinics. Looking at new sites for pull-tabs. They are in the middle of a compliance review. Will meet July 27th for the results. Discussion about team registration fees for the tournament. Costs are going up for ice and referees.

Motion to adjourn the meeting: (MM) (CT). Motion carried. Meeting adjourned by President Jim Cich at 9:15 p.m.
