From President (Tom Lucarelli):

Hi again,

We are about a month and a half into the season. By now, most of the teams have played a few games or scrimmages and coaches are busy evaluating our teams and adjusting practices to keep your Knight’s progress on track.  Remember our youth program is focused on developing your hockey players.

Encourage your son or daughter to watch a hockey game on TV; watch the offensive, defensive and neutral zone play. You can pick up a lot of good hockey tips that can be applied to your practices and games. Knowing your position both on the offensive and defensive side of the puck is crucial to the success of any team.

Hopefully by the next newsletter, we can get our teams on outdoor ice for pick-up games. The Thanksgiving tournament is just around the corner. Good luck to the teams participating – represent the Association well both on and off the ice.

Reminder - all fundraising activities must be approved by the fundraising committee. We want to avoid teams either duplicating or calling on the same businesses.

See you at the rink,

From Web Master (Torri Johnson):

Website News:

1)       Game Results - Watch for game updates along the right hand side of the home page as they come in.  Any game that is run by a referee is recorded as a game result.  This includes District 1, District 2, and District 3 games, Tournament results, and Game Scrimmages.  Controlled scrimmages run by coaches are not recorded, nor are Initiation Festivals.

2)       Game write-ups – If the team manager submitted a synopsis of the game, a pencil mark will show next to the game result on the home page.  Click on the pencil to see the game write-up.

3)       Standings - To see the standings of all the teams (IYHA teams only), go to Our Teams along the top bar and Standings.  You will need to choose either Boys or Girls to see the overall standings for those teams.

4)       Statistics – To see the overall statistics for the Boys or Girls divisions, go to Our Teams/statistics.  Only the statistics for the teams that choose to record them will show in this area.  Click on Division Top 20 to see the overall totals for the division.

5)       Master Schedule changes – you may notice a new icon in the Master Schedule.  It is an official’s whistle.  In addition, you may notice information in red/yellow/green in the official’s column.  The Bantam A team is testing this feature to reserve game volunteer positions (such as timekeeper, scorekeeper, and penalty box) although it is showing up for all teams.  Don’t be alarmed since you cannot use this feature yet for your team.  No matter what you click on, this will not be available to you yet.  Once the testing is done, we may roll it out to other teams if it proves to be useful.  Stay tuned.

6)       Because of the testing of the official’s (game volunteer) features, the Officials Area button along the left hand side now requires a sign-on.  The information that was there previously is also available in other areas.  The Game Clock Simulator is available on the Hey Coach page and the Hockey Parents/Hockey Mom’s page.  The Hockey Penalties overview is located in the Hockey Parents page.

Irondale Youth Hockey Association October Meeting Minutes:

IYHA Meeting Board Meeting:  October 23, 2008.  Note: These minutes have not been approved. They will be reviewed, corrected as needed, and approved at the next regular Board of Directors Meeting.

Called to order at 6:35 p.m. by President Tom Lucarelli.

Board Members Present:  Jean Aukee, Monica Crandall, Theresa Spiering, Jackie Rog, Chris Drews, Mike Nundahl, Tom Johnson, Mark Rupp, Jeanne Falconer and Bob Gabler

Board Members Absent:  None

Guests:  Ashley Crandall, Dave Larson, Tim Fredberg, Paul Dulin, Lena Anderson (mite parent) and Torri Johnson

Minutes:  Motion to accept board meeting minutes as presented (CD) (MN); all accepted; motion carried.

Old Business:

A.     Election Process – Chris Drews – see handout – see notes on handout – Chris will update – Jackie moved to table document, Bob seconded, all approved, motion carried.

B.     Display Case at SSR – Mike Nundahl – Mike was supposed to have researched glass prices, that didn’t happen, he has a question – is there a dollar amount limit for glass?  IYHA has moneys not budgeted for like Pancake Breakfast $1500 or Torri J Xcel volunteer donation – Chris moved to approve a maximum of $500 for glass for the display case at SSR, Jeanne second, all approved, motion carried.

New Business:

A.    Website Update – Torri – see handout – Torri documented what the process has been so far – clarification on club sponsors vs team sponsors – (Paul’s comments for item E added at this point.)  Paul - should there be a certain dollar amount that a team sponsor could give that would warrant them being a club sponsor?  No per Torri’s documentation.  Paul also wanted clarification on club vs team sponsors and how items are placed on the website.  Provided with Torri’s documentation.

Chris comment regarding why the 5 pull tab sites are listed as sponsors?  Bob suggestion – dollar amount levels determine who gets what website placement.  Chris – should the fundraising committee decide on these possible dollar amount levels?  All sponsors are currently on the sponsorship page.  Torri’s document doesn’t need to be approved – just a procedural document.

B.     IYHA Sweatshirts – Torri – another option for apparel – hockey mom from Tartan who currently does hockey mom sweatshirts – Torri brought samples of what she could do – Irondale Hockey with gold lace - $45 plus $10 extra with name on back – Jackets with Irondale Hockey – logo and name - $45 – something teams could do individually – Irondale Knights hockey blanket – – she does apparel for WBL, Tartan etc – OK for Torri to post her products on the website and Mike’s item will still expire at the end of October.

a.     Chris Drews piggy back proposal – warm up suits for the kids – name on back of jacket and on pants – black and white - $65 each if 20 or more ordered – idea for next year – possibly present at registration or online – he got them at Dave’s.

b.     Another option is to build apparel into registration costs – We need something at an association level that is not team level – too much different apparel for players – Bob moves that for next season we pick a consistent warm up suit for all IYHA traveling players (if teams choose to have a warm up suit) – design and vendor will be chosen by the board, CD second, all approved, motion carried.  It will be offered to players at registration – discussion ensued – mandate? – cheap form of advertising – finalize details later.

C.    Bantams – Jim Cich – see handouts – Jim read his handout – discussion about Dave Larson’s son - they still had the option to go back to Bloomington Jefferson – they would have taken Ben back – they had 2 teams and only one goalie.  Per Dave BJ does a good job coaching goalies.  Discussion ensued.  Other kids on other teams were not called and found out what team they were on from school mates – totally inexcusable.   Jim would like their registration fee returned (291.50) and to still get refunded for the goalie clinic ($100) that Adam already attended.  Their volunteer deposit will also be returned.  Mark made a motion to refund what Jim has requested and he extended an apology to Jim and Adam.  All should understand this is a limited exception because of the extreme case of this situation – JF second, all approved, Jean abstained, motion carried.

D.    Addition to registration form re tryouts – Paul Dulin – this is not aimed to be derogatory to anyone in the assn – this proposal is for the betterment of the assn – Paul would like a board member to make a motion to add an item to the registration document that reads by signing this document, I acknowledge that the results of the tryout process are non-negotiable, non-debatable and final.  Jeanne suggestion that the new board in May of next year take action on this.  Tim F – need bubble kid or two because the evaluators don’t know the kids.  Chris - issue with process presented 3 hours before first tryout and some of the language in the tryout process document.  Jackie – because we are paying evaluators people should be able to see the numbers and know where their kids ended up.  Plus goalies need to know what the process is to evaluate them.  There should be a signed document at the first tryout that you will agree with the process.  IYHA has stuck to the tryout process that was used this year.  There is a note in the tryout process about bubble kids who will be selected by coaches but were no bubble kids this year.

E.     Sponsors on the website – Paul Dulin – this was done during Torri’s item A above.

Board Roundtable:

President: Tom Lucarelli. – Tom would like to work on the tryout process – this year he received the most calls ever.  ACE Coordinator – he put an ad out via the newsletter – 2 expressed an interest – Mark is already doing some of these task so he will continue – Tom has appointed Mark Rupp as ACE Coordinator.  Bylaws state Edison can tryout 2008 and 2009 season – need to extend it for next year – someone remember to do next year – policy is only for 2 years and started last season – Jean will put on the agenda for January of next year.  Be careful when combine practices between 2 levels (i.e. squirts and pee wees) – skating drills can be done together – other things can’t – be careful mixing contact drills with others.

Vice President: Monica Crandall. – few coaches and parents spoke with Monica about the 12 hours for volunteer program – traveling spouse, little one at home, they have time restrictions and don’t think they can fulfill their hours – OK if it is a family member – grandparent or aunt or uncle – can other parents donate their time to another kid?  Sure - OK with board.  But the person doing the work needs to log the hours on behalf of the family not working.  And the person can only "donate" extra hours over and above the 12 they had already fulfilled with the only exception that they can only donate to 1 other family.  Have all paid the volunteer deposit? Per Jeanne all but one or two.  Tournament committee has met – things going well with MV – a lot coming together quickly – still have girls teams tournament slots to fill in January – will be meeting weekly.  Make it Big Photos – proposal for dates sent from Karen Franke – Jean will forward the email to all.  Managers/Treasurers Meeting – October 28th 7:00 SSR – allow 50 people.

Secretary: Jean Aukee. – Reminder that input for the newsletter is due on the 1st of each month.  If you don’t have anything, please reply to Jean’s email saying that.  If you have a written report that can be emailed to Jean for the minutes, please do so.  Thanks.

Treasurer: Theresa Spiering. – reports will be emailed to board members – one bounced check is being worked on.

Boys Program Coordinator: Mark Rupp. – tryouts completed – fairest tryouts in years – couple hiccups – 30 plus pullovers still missing – some returned in poor condition – please take care of our gear – teams formed and practices on their way – coaches manual completed and copies made – will it be on the website? – yes per Mark – coaches meeting – Saturday and Wednesday meetings coming up – levels of play – 32 bantams – lost 2 kids – A and B (C changed via advisory committee), 45 peewees a b c, 43 squirts a b c – all teams registered for tournaments – 2 teams not in our tournaments because of changes – Chris would like to be informed about changes to team levels so he is in the loop with District 1 and District 2, we are supposed to ask permission to change levels, Jackie only found out because of email sent to all bantam parents, Tom L called Tom M asap to ensure OK.

Tryouts – Tryouts are completed and we have been told these were the fairest tryouts they have seen in years.  Did we have a couple of hiccups, yes, but those have been ironed out and we are looking forward to an awesome season.   We are still missing over 30 pullovers from tryouts.  Those must be turned in to the head coach of your team.

Teams - Teams are formed and practices are well underway.   We have awesome coaches at every level.

Coaching Manual - The coaching manuals have been for the most part distributed to just about all coaches on the boy’s side.  I have copies tonight for the board members who want one.  Some of you already have a copy.

Coaches pre-season meeting -   Because of circumstances beyond my control, the pre-season meeting did not happen before the start of the year.  However, we will be having two scheduled meetings, one this Saturday October 25th and the other will be next Wednesday October 29th.  Coaches will be expected to attend one of these two meetings.  We are waiting for confirmation of a meeting location before an official notice will be going out.

Boys Levels of play – We have talked about this at length, but an update along with registration numbers would seem to be helpful.  At the Bantam level we have 32 kids registered and playing.  Unfortunately we lost a couple of great kids who decided not to play.  One thing to note concerning our Bantams is the level of play.  An argument was made to my advisory committee post try outs to change from a “C” level to a “B2” level.  This made sense so we agreed to the change.  The Pee Wee group has maintained 45 kids we are fielding teams at the A/B/C levels. The Squirts have 42 total kids, which is up a net 3 from the initial registration numbers.  Again we are fielding teams at the A/B/C levels.   Overall we have 119 boys from Squirts through Bantams on our teams.

Tournaments –All our teams are registered for tournaments which have been paid and spots secured.  Our Bantam B2 team and Squirt B teams are on wait lists for our own tournament in November.  This is due in large part to the change in level, and the timing of when we added the 3rd Squirt team.  Teams at the Squirt level will be participating in 3 tournaments, while the teams at Peewees and above will be participating in 4 tournaments.

Girls Program Coordinator: Mike Nundahl. – 10Us and 12Us completed game scheduling – still working on 14Us – coaches meeting coming up regarding player movement within girls program – tournaments finalized – one possible more with 14Us – 8Us starting this weekend – recruit your friends.

Initiation Program Coordinator: Bob Gabler. – 78 kids in initiation – registered – could be even more – up from last year – thanks to recruitment via parades, Let’s Try Hockey etc – going away from A B C and mini’s – may be color coordinated – head coaches are identified and has list of assistant coaches – managers meeting will be next week – jerseys and socks will be handed out – Mike, Jackie and Bob – how work in U8s?  “A” mites may practice with the squirt level on occasion – bring U8s in with other mite levels – do when have 2 hours – gold, white, black and maroon is an option.

District Representative: Chris Drews. – gave ACE coordinator stuff to Mark – can be copied and distributed – 2 MN hockey books – SSR and Shoreview – D1 scheduling will be Saturday all day – Jackie will be there.  CEP – level 1 certification is this Sunday October 26th from 8:00 to 2:00, level 2 is November 2 from 8:00 to 5:00 and level 3 is November 9 from 8:00 to 5:00.  All will be at Concordia College.  Register at  If full call or email Chris.  Managers meetings - Nov 5th 7:00 Arlington HS – See Chris’s hand written notes – USA team hired to do clinics – issue in past with scheduling games on Fridays and Saturdays and referees – if we schedule a game on a Saturday afternoon – we need to get DIST1 waiver and then can get other referees – Nov 10th will be voted on.  Chris needs to do a financial review with District.  Bob?  Are the borders at the rinks ours to use – SSR and Shoreview – yes, share with MV at both sites.

Ice Commissioner: Jackie Rog. – list of people to call from DIST3 – per Tom L.  Tom M – list of lower level squirts – will bring to scheduling meeting – we are paying all the fees – ice and referees etc – would another tournament be a better solution?

Registration Coordinator:  Jeanne Falconer. – need screening forms from all board members – 3 outstanding – only one family without volunteer deposit – doesn’t include families that haven’t paid at all – handful of kids involved – book signing won’t be done my Manager/Treasurer meeting – some forms still missing – total registered is about 252.  Credit card update – check PO box.

Equipment Manager: Tom Johnson. – half of socks and jerseys handed out – please wash jerseys before they are returned – Dave’s equipment that was given out for free needs to be returned to IYHA for use with other kids in future years.

Standing Reports:

Player and Coach Development: Mark Rupp. – members of player development committee meeting regularly – posted on website – coaches instructions – should be out on Fridays – A and B mites joining skills clinics – posted on website – next 3 Mondays.

The members of the Player and coach development committee (Jeff Opperman, chair, Jeff Martin, Mike Nundahl, Mark Hentges, Mike Martinjako, Tadd Tuomie, Bob Gabler, and I) have met on a regular basis and the skills sessions are off and running, with 3 so far.  For each session, the format and content has been posted on the website for coaches to review ahead of time.  This has been received positively by our coaches.

Lake Region: Theresa Spiering. – per Jeanne F – we got money - $4000 payable to the Coliseum – LR pulled out of Our Bar and Grill – not profitable – Moe’s will be starting a meat raffle on Friday nights.

Fundraising Committee:  Monica Crandall.   Calendar proposal – Sell for $20 - $10 cost of calendar & $10 for assn – kids sell but not door to door – parents help out – sell to extended family – could we make our own & would they sell better?  Chris contact Kevin Bourassa to see if he could make them – Chris will get back to Monica asap so she can get back to the fundraising committee.

Additional business:  None

Motion to adjourn meeting (BG) (CD); motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 9:22 p.m.
