Irondale Youth Hockey Association
Board Meeting: Thursday, March 16, 2006 at 6:30 p.m.
in the New Brighton Family Service Center, New Brighton, MN.
Address: IYHA, PO Box 120114, New Brighton, MN   55112 Web:
From President Jim Cich:
March 2006
Another season of play is completed. Congratulations to the players. Thank you to the coaches, managers and parents. Now the season of planning and preparation is underway to make the necessary improvements for next year. Thank you for your patience concerning the rescheduling of the February Board Meeting. The team playoffs threw us off our regular night.
The rescheduled meeting date didn’t damper the attendance. We had our biggest showing of the year forcing some to stand. The turnout was fantastic. The concerns and suggestions voiced by those present will help guide us towards next season. Thank you for those who took the time.
The IYHA elections will take place in April. There are opportunities to join the Board in the positions of Vice President, Treasurer, Registration and Initiation Coordinator. Interested persons must submit an introductory profile to be placed in the April newsletter. This year’s election will allow for in-person voting at the election meeting as well as an opportunity to vote via e-mail for those who cannot attend the meeting. Watch for final details in the April newsletter.
There are many variables to be determined in the coming weeks and months to prepare for next season. We have a Tricity partnership to consider and a probable change in the Minnesota Hockey District structure. (Minnesota Hockey will determine those changes during their April 28-30 Spring Meetings.)   What is most important is to get our own house in order.   Plans for improvements in the season structure and player development are underway and will continue into the summer and fall. Get involved.
Jim Cich
IYHA 20,000 Puck Club
IYHA is pleased to announce the start of a 20,000 Puck Club starting this spring and summer.  Players that shoot at least 20,000 pucks (10,000 for returning Initiation players) during the off-season from March until the end of August will receive a 20,000 Puck Club t-shirt next fall.  All you have to do is write down the number of pucks you shoot each day in the calendar provided, add up the total, have you and a parent or guardian sign the sheet and turn it in at registration next fall.
The key to developing a good shot is to practice shooting.  Achieving the goal only takes shooting 160 pucks a day over the course of six months.  This only takes 10 minutes a day.  It is a small investment of your time to achieve big results.  Having a good shot does not take magic, it just takes practice.
 Have Fun!

Congratulations to one of our own Irondale Hockey Association parents. Tim Morris, Irondale parent of B Bantam Shane Morris, is the head coach of the Eden Prairie Girls High School Hockey Team. Tim coached the Eden Prairie Eagles to the High School State Championship on February 25th with a 6-1 win over Coon Rapids. Many of you may have seen Tim being interviewed on TV. Shane was spotted on TV, too during the celebration and awards ceremony at the Xcel Energy Center. Congratulations to Tim!

Board members present:        Jim Cich, Brian Johnson, Niki Gjere, Jeanne Falconer, Renae Olesen, Mark Mohar, Cheryl Mason, Tom Welty, Pat O’Connor, Randy Bortot.
Board Members absent:          Chris Tahti.
Guests:                                   Sue Sentieri, Dale Aukee, Chris Drews, Michael Durheim, Mark Rupp, Becky Ewing, Tadd Tuomie, John Donovan, Barry Rog, Rick LaPorte, Tim Fredberg, Patty Fredberg, Ray Mularie, Mike Nundahl, John Dalnes, Torri Johnson.
Meeting called to order by President Jim Cich at 6: 32 p.m. Agenda reviewed.
Minutes reviewed. Motion to approve the minutes as presented (CM) (RO). Motion carried. Chris Tahti had requested one clarification—it was supposed to be Highland Blue team (not Highland Red team) that had many A level players.
Becky Ewing: For the most part son Zach enjoyed the year. Sustained an injury at the beginning of the year. Son should not have been moved off the ice—believes referees did not deal with this situation appropriately. (Jim Cich stated this has been dealt with through the District.) Discussed concern about fair play and equal play. What is IYHA’s position on this? There were few alternatives to having feedback heard—Coach was the primary person to contact and did nothing. Mark Mohar had not heard of this issue, he needs to be informed of concerns that are not dealt with at the team level
B Bantams: Torri Johnson.
We need to do what is best for the kids in the program. There are three groups that have the greatest effect on the kids—parents, coaches and Board. Story of B Bantams—went zero for 31 games. Should focus on the development of the kids. Read copy of “B Bantam Speech” that is Call to Action to the Board of Directors. Distributed copies of the document to the board members.
Tim and Patty Fredberg: Have had many conversations about these issues. A lot of things that have been concerns are being addressed. Appreciates the progress, wants to assure it is continued. High School shooting room available to all, information came too late. Player development is important. Off season development is important. Concern about players that we lost this season—first year Bantams and they are done. Encourages the Board to go forward and do the player development. Regarding volunteering—ask for help—there are people out there that are willing to help, just ask.
Bantam A: Sue Sentieri
Sent several emails in November and December. Concerned about 2 hour slots for games, when games are 1 ½ hours. No way to use that extra half hour. Would like to see that the Board takes that money and gives it back to the teams. 10 home games, 30 minutes each time, total of 5 hours of ice. Minnesota Hockey rules state cannot use the extra for practice. When did ice some time ago, schedule was 1 ½ hours. In the future, need to not waste the ice. Approximately $700-750 cost. She has no children on the team—is the team manager.
Additional note: Dale Aukee’s team had 3 hours of ice that were given to them when they had a tournament. The tournament was set in August. The ice was assigned after that. It is nice when Girls Coordinator got people together to work out the ice. Need an Ice Committee. Master list for ice should go on the website. Share the volunteer opportunities.
Tadd: Tri City should schedule the A Bantam games. Use three hour blocks for two games. Bring both jerseys. There isn’t really any home ice anyway, so could have the teams be set.
Do we have a quorum that can vote on this? We should consider this in a larger context. There are other teams that have had similar circumstances. Next Board meeting is in 16 days. Will deal with this at next board meeting.
Non rostered coaches and players on the ice: Sue Sentieri.
Has seen non-registered adults on the ice. Or adults registered on the ice with one team, and on the ice with another team. Is an Associate Registrar with Minnesota Hockey. Need to put into place a contract with the Head Coaches to make sure they know. Two times during the season people have been reminded, emails have gone out. Two associations in the United States were sued due to non coverage and folded. They were denied the reimbursement and then the Association was sued. They folded. There is a rule for an “incidental coach” where they can coach one or two times per season. USA Hockey rule, not TC discretion. Concern from Board members that they are not listened to when addressing this issue to the parent or coach. Will address this issue with the coaches and managers next year.
Tri-City update: Jim Cich.
Had a flurry of meetings. Trying to work out some issues. Tri City high schools are working out where they are going to go. They may not even last next year (boys) and girls maybe a little longer. We didn’t want to go forward unless there was an alignment with the high schools. Also, unclear about the redistricting. Discussed with Minnesota Hockey (Mark Jorgensen)—there are no rules at Minnesota Hockey that controls the youth associations. Tri City has stepped back trying to figure out what the high schools were going to do. Worksheet distributed. Needs to be Irondale Knights. Tri City would dissolve, bring assets to IYHA. Have been talking. No final decisions. Tri City negotiating with IYHA and nobody else. Still several items that could kill the discussions. Tri City’s biggest concern is that they would have a fair shake at activities—playing, coaching, etc. Any party at any time can say we withdraw. Tri City Board is asking for us to acknowledge that we are negotiating in a good faith effort.
Discussion. Helpful to get more kids in the pool. For tryouts need to keep parents of there. Use non-parent evaluators (non-affiliated evaluators). We need more kids, more parents, more ice. When will they determine the high school affiliations? The Tri City President is talking with the High School Head Coach. Schools – District 13 and 14—Columbia Heights and Fridley. They may decide to have each go to different places. Need to have the High School on board or we shouldn’t do the youth—we will have no strength at the High School program if we don’t do this. There are several Tri City families that want to come to Irondale Youth Hockey.
Would like to continue to explore the merger. Need to continue discussion. Minnesota Hockey, Districts 1, 2, and 3 are aware of the discussions.
Minnesota State High School League is the one that need to say what can happen with the High Schools, not Minnesota Hockey.
Motion to authorize Jim Cich, President IYHA to sign a letter of intent to allow IYHA to continue merger discussions with Tri City Youth Hockey Association; with the option to discontinue discussions at any time (JF) (RB). Discussion. Need to have membership informed as discussions progress so we can get feedback. The Board needs to have feedback before any vote is taken. Motion carried. No abstentions.
Team Projections: Jim Cich.
Updated Team Projections distributed. Projections for next year—Irondale alone, and Irondale with Tri City players.
Elections: Jim Cich.
Had problems with elections last year. Need to clarify how elections will be held this year. In person, absentee, or whatever. Positions that are open include: Registration, Treasurer, Vice President, Initiation Program Coordinator. Motion to continue with in person vote, with absentee votes granted by President as requested at least 7 days prior to the election (TW) (MM). Discussion.  Motion carried.
Vice President: Brian Johnson
Thank you for the turnout of members that have come to the meeting. Summer parades are coming up. There are energized parents that will help throughout the season. The equipment loaner program is successful—need to have more equipment donated. Very positive program. Thank you to the managers for all of their work this season.
Secretary: Niki Gjere.
Newsletter deadline is March 3rd. Surveys are going to go out. Need feedback about survey content. Please get that to Niki by Thursday morning.
Treasurer: Jeanne Falconer. Report distributed. Confirmed with Lake Region that we will receive a check to the Super Rink for $4000.00. B PeeWees—want to give a $25.00 memorial to our Association (grandfather of Rob Hunt). Will need ideas soon. Income decreased significantly this past spring (pull-tabs reduction). Need to pursue sponsorships and fundraising.
Boys Program Coordinator: Mark Mohar.
B Pee Wee team finished 2nd in the Duluth Tournament. A Bantam team went undefeated in Davenport Tournament.
Motion that the Board funds a 20,000 puck program and they turn in their calendar from now and the end of August. If they meet the goal they will get a t-shirt. Initiation would need to 10,000 pucks. (MM) (NG) Discussion. Will seek sponsors for the program. Could get a penny a puck program (Suggestion from Tadd). Motion carried.
Player Development:
Will receive a check refund for the West Bend A Bantam tournament.
Helmets for coaches—there has been a lot of feedback from the coaches. We are not insured through Minnesota Hockey. There has been a lot of discussion and feedback. Stay tuned.
Girls Program Coordinator: Chris Tahti. Absent. Report submitted via Jim Cich. No time to continue discussion or meeting, will discuss at the next meeting. (Motion was requested, no time to pursue.)
Motion to adjourn (NG) (MM), motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m. Agenda for next meeting will move those to the top of the agenda that did not have a chance to report at this meeting.
