Boys High School Team wears helmet stickers for Carter Olson
The Knights Boys High School Hockey Team thanks all the IYHA families and players that came to the January 28th game against Spring lake Park.  They were very impressed with the turnout and appreciate everyone who supported Honorary Knight Carter Olson.  The Mites were introduced as the Varsity little buddies, skated in-between periods and went into the locker room to hear the coaches talk to the high school players.

Pictures will be uploaded to the website soon.   Thank YOU!

 Jack's Pledge
by posted 01/15/2012

All of us in the hockey community are concerned with the recent player injuries and the overall safety of our players within the game.  Jack’s youth association, the Minneapolis Storm, has setup a grass roots effort aimed at enhancing safety in the game of hockey. Through membership in Jack’s Pledge, hockey associations, hockey teams, hockey coaches and hockey players (boys and girls) and parents pledge to play the Right Way -- Jack's Way -- by the rules, safe, smart and skillfully.
A number of our members have requested that we join this pledge as an association, which we are now doing.  The association’s role in this is largely clerical – distributing helmet stickers, tracking penalties and potential player suspensions.  The real change is driven by ourselves – players, coaches and parents and in how we play, instruct and show our enthusiasm at the rink.  In that regard I ask all of our members to visit Jack'sPledge.com, print out the Players, Coaches or Association pledge, read and sign it as a symbol of your commitment.  Keep it with you, in your bag or pocket when at the rink as a reminder of your personal commitment to change the game.
As soon as we receive the helmet stickers they will be distributed through the Team managers.
Teams should review the pledge requirements for potential self imposed penalties and suspensions, as once each team take the pledge, these are to be enforced immediately by the coaching staff.
Have fun and be safe at the rink,
Gerry Johnsen
President IYHA

IYHA Player on Cover of Lets Play Hockey
by posted 01/09/2012

If you haven’t seen the January 7th edition of Let’s Play Hockey (www.letsplayhockey.com) take a look at the player in the 40th anniversary on the cover.  That is an Irondale player during Hockey Day in Minnesota at Herbert Rink (Long Lake) on January 23, 2010.  You can see all the photos from that day, in the Pictures section - Album  010 MN Hockey Day.
Hockey Day in Minnesota 01/23/10 at Long Lake - IYHA PeeWees and Squirts had outdoor fun. This photo was used for the 40th anniversary cover of Let's Play Hockey

In other news, some of you may remember former IYHA player Dan Lienemann. Dan now plays for Hudson Youth Hockey as a Bantam.  He recently fractured 5 vertebrae as a result of a hockey check, but is expected to make a full recovery.  He was interviewed and his story aired on Fox News Sunday night.  Dan's parents and one of his younger sisters were at the Irondale v. Simley High School Boys game on January 7th.  It is the first hockey game they have attended since Dan's accident.

 Concussion Education and Training
by posted 12/15/2011

Awareness of concussions and their long-term mental health impact is at an all-time high.  That said, when faced with a potential concussion, whether at the arena or at home following a sporting event, do you know what to look for?

Minnesota law mandates that concussion training and information be made available to all coaches, officials, players and parents/guardians.  So, as I am all about compliance with the law, I provide the below link to the CDC concussion website for your edification and education.  At the CDC website, you'll find plenty of information about concussions, including a coaches concussion training module.

Note, for those coaches who have taken the quite lengthy USA Hockey age-specific module (and your time to do so is running out, by the way) it is the opinion of D10 that the concussion section in the modules satisfies the required concussion training.

 A sweet deal for IYHA
by posted 12/01/2011

Beginning this Saturday and on the first and third Saturdays of each month, the DAIRY QUEEN on Old Highway 8 (end of parade route) will be celebrating Irondale Youth Hockey day by providing IYHA with an amount equal to 10% of the days total sales.  NO COUPONS are required. NO IDENTIFICATION as being with IYHA is required.  We make money on all sales on those days, but clearly it is in our best interest to encourage family, friends and co-workers to visit the Old Highway 8 DQ on these days.  Additionally, DQ will give $5 for every DQ ice cream cake sold on these days.

In the next day or two, we will announce a special pre-order promotion for the DQ Candy Cane Holiday Cake that will provide IYHA with $5 per cake as well!
